Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine that can have profound effects on your well-being. Their conveniently located clinic in the heart of Hillcrest in San Diego, California proudly welcomes LGBTQ families and employs a diversified team of medical professionals that focus on reproduction for both men and women. To learn more about how this one-of-a-kind center can support your comfort, safety, and overall health, schedule an appointment by phone or online today.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a system of healing derived from Chinese medicine. The core philosophy of acupuncture is that your body contains a life-force energy (qi), that needs to be kept in balance and harmony in order for you to be healthy. By balancing your qi, you restore your body’s natural regenerative abilities and strengthen its ability to heal on its own.
Your acupuncturist balances your qi by inserting ultrathin needles or filaments into very specific points of your body, called acupoints. These acupoints help direct your qi through particular energy pathways, known as meridians.
Western medicine recognizes acupoints as the convergence site of many important blood vessels, nerve bundles, and lymph tissue, and the Acupuncture Evidence Project has demonstrated acupuncture’s ability to treat 177 different conditions, including allergies, gynecological disorders, and heart problems.
How can acupuncture help me on my childbirth journey?
Deb can use acupuncture to enhance your experience at every stage of your childbirth journey, including:
PUSH San Diego uses acupuncture to treat all different types of infertility issues and to support both natural fertility and IUI/IVF measures. By restoring the body’s natural harmony, acupuncture can help balance a woman’s reproductive cycle and a man’s hormones. Acupuncture fertility treatments typically take about three months, with visits anywhere from once or twice a week to once or twice a month.
Receiving acupuncture during pregnancy can promote the healthy development of your baby by increasing blood flow to your uterus, helping protect you from:
- Potential miscarriage
- Nausea and vomiting
- Back and pelvic pain
- Low iron levels
- Breech baby
Pregnancy acupuncture treatments generally begin between weeks 36 and 38.
Labor and birth
Acupuncture can greatly assist in preparing you for the labor process by releasing particular hormones, like prostaglandin, relaxin, and oxytocin. PUSH San Diego also offers acupuncture services during your labor and birth. You can schedule a licensed and insured PUSH Professional Birth Angel to be with you during your big day. While Birth Angels typically just use acupressure during labor and birth, there are instances where acupuncture can help, too.
Acupuncture can help you heal, recover, and regain your strength after you’ve delivered your beautiful baby. PUSH San Diego can also use acupuncture to support your lactation and postpartum emotional state.
What should I expect from my acupuncture appointment?
Your acupuncture treatment begins with a consultation at PUSH San Diego’s state-of-the-art wellness center in the heart of Hillcrest. From your safe, healing, treatment room, you and the team of dedicated professionals discuss your condition and decide upon a particular course of treatment.
PUSH San Diego practices Japanese acupuncture, which utilizes a minimally invasive insertion technique to make your experience more comfortable, relaxing, and pain-free. Your treatment will be incredibly soothing – most patients actually fall asleep during their session and feel deeply relaxed afterwards.

How do I prepare for an optimal birth experience?
PUSH San Diego is dedicated to ensuring your birthing experience is as seamless as possible for both you and baby. The team collaborates to gently encourage the onset of labor through personalized acupuncture treatments.
Acupuncture supports your body and triggers the labor process once your baby is ready. The team modifies each treatment according to three levels of intensity (from low to medium to high), depending on the unique circumstances surrounding your pregnancy.
Deb, who’s one of the world’s leading experts in acupuncture for labor and birth, performs or oversees all services the clinic provides. PUSH San Diego is also home to a skilled massage therapist who specializes in techniques to improve labor and birth.
What are the benefits of acupuncture before labor and birth?
With acupuncture, as your body starts releasing hormones, including prostaglandins, your cervix ripens and your ligaments loosen. Plus, your acupuncture treatments release oxytocin to help you relax. Acupuncture has even been shown to:
- Help maintain a healthy blood pressure
- Reduce your rate of medical intervention
- Shorten the duration of active labor
- Turn a malpositioned baby
- Minimize stress and anxiety
- Boost your energy
- Reduce pain
Acupuncture before labor and birth is highly beneficial for vaginal birth after Cesarean section (VBAC), particularly because of the effects of tissue-relaxing hormones.
Coming in to PUSH San Diego for regular acupuncture treatments before birth is entirely pain-free. Treatments provide relaxing effects, and you have access to a team of women’s health experts who can answer all of the questions you may have before your big day.
When can I start acupuncture for birth?
You are welcome to start at any point along your pregnancy journey. Ideally, you should get started on your birth treatment plan between weeks 36-38. PUSH San Diego generally recommends weekly sessions during this time. Beginning at week 38, you can undergo acupuncture twice a week.
If you’re going past your due date and don’t want to undergo an induction, you can come in to PUSH San Diego daily or every other day between weeks 40-42. With ongoing acupuncture treatments, your body produces its own hormones, so you begin experiencing that gradual promotion of labor in the most natural manner possible.
How does acupuncture during labor work?
During labor, you can undergo acupuncture treatments to help reduce pain and keep you calm. This type of acupuncture is a little different because you may need several needles to treat multiple points simultaneously.
As labor progresses, your provider targets one or two points at a time. Your PUSH professional can seamlessly weave the acupuncture into the rhythm of your contractions/surges, while incorporating massage, auricular acupuncture (which attaches to your ear), or electrical stimulation to help you manage discomfort throughout your labor and birth.

Cupping therapy is an incredible way to improve your overall health and is becoming increasingly popular in recent years, especially with athletes. The team at PUSH San Diego offers a variety of cupping therapy services, with a specialized focus in treatments with fertility patients, during all stages of pregnancy, and postpartum. Have you heard about abdominal cupping? Ask us about it. To learn more about what cupping therapy can do for you, schedule a visit today by calling the office or booking an appointment online.
What is cupping therapy?
Cupping is a type of traditional Chinese therapy that involves creating suction on certain areas of your skin using pressurized cups. Cupping therapy dates all the way back to the 4th century AD, and is thought to have been first practiced by Ge Hong, a famous Taoist alchemist and herbalist.
How does cupping therapy work?
On its most basic level, cupping therapy increases blood flow to the areas where the cups are placed. This improved circulation can help relieve muscle tension, promote cell repair, and form new connective tissues and blood vessels.
This improved blood flow also helps to direct the flow of your body’s life-force energy, or qi. Taoists believe that cupping therapy works to balance your yin and yang (the positive and negative energy within your body). Balancing your qi or your yin and yang helps improve your body’s natural ability to regenerate and heal itself.
What does cupping therapy treat?
Cupping therapy can be used on any of your acupoints, which enables it to treat an incredibly wide range of conditions, like skin issues and digestive problems. A review of studies published in PLOS One in 2012 found that cupping therapy is effective in treating:
- Facial paralysis
- Cough and dyspnea
- Lumbar disc herniation
- Cervical spondylosis
PUSH San Diego specializes in using acupressure techniques, like cupping therapy, in all stages of childbirth, including fertility, pregnancy, birth and labor, and postpartum.
The practice is also unique in their offering of breast cupping therapy. Cupping therapy performed on your breasts have a number of benefits, including:
- Stimulating the lymphatic cleansing process
- Reducing inflammation
- Toning and firming your skin
- Helping your body break down any benign cysts in your breasts
- Detoxifying and restoring a healthy pH balance in your blood and surrounding tissues
Talk to a PUSH San Diego clinician to learn more about what cupping therapy can do for your breasts.
What is naval cupping?
Naval cupping is an ancient technique where a large glass cup is placed over a patient's belly button. It is done to remove toxins in the body that can affect the patient as chronic pain, digestive issues, infertility challenges and so much more. PUSH San Diego is one of the only clinics trained in this special art of cupping and it is an extremely unique and powerful technique. Last winter there was a patient who came in 23 weeks pregnant with twins. Her cervix was prematurely shortening and she was starting to go into early labor. The team cupped her abdomen several times and all preterm labor signs stopped, and she vaginally birthed healthy twins at term at 40 weeks.
What happens during my cupping treatment?
First, your clinician discusses what conditions you hope to clear up with cupping therapy and then identifies the appropriate acupoints to stimulate. Next, they heat up a small, rounded cup that’s typically made from glass.
Once your cup is sufficiently heated, they place the open side of it directly onto your skin. As the air cools inside the cup, it creates a vacuum that pulls your skin and muscle upward into the cup. They leave the cup on your acupoint for a few minutes before removing it and applying ointment or a bandage to the area.

Dr. Deb Davies, DACM, L.Ac., of PUSH San Diego is an expert in caring for patients who have experienced multiple miscarriages. Her experience with losing a stillborn baby makes her extremely sensitive to this topic. Dr. Deb and her team evaluates patients as a whole and finds integrative treatment solutions to bring your body back to optimal balance, so you can experience a healthy pregnancy. Find out more information by booking a miscarriage evaluation at this San Diego-based practice today. You can schedule a visit through the website or you can call to find out more information.
What causes multiple miscarriages?
Recurrent pregnancy loss means that you’ve experienced two or more consecutive miscarriages before 20 weeks. While miscarriage is common and affects about 15% of pregnant women, recurring miscarriages are not common (they only affect about 2% or fewer of pregnant women). Ongoing unexpected pregnancy loss could be related to:
- Chromosomal or genetic abnormalities (from the egg or sperm)
- Advanced maternal age (over age 35)
- Abnormality of your uterus
- Poor health of the man or woman
Because experiencing multiple miscarriages is devastating and can add stress that can affect your future fertility and pregnancy health, it’s very important to get help.
When should I get medical help for multiple miscarriages?
The team at PUSH San Diego lovingly refers to pregnancies after a loss as a “rainbow baby.” They are dedicated to ensuring you experience the miracle of childbirth and helping you every step of the way. They encourage you to come in for an evaluation if you:
- Experience spotting or rupture of membranes
- Had difficulty getting pregnant (infertility)
- Experience severe nausea and vomiting
- Notice agonizing back and pelvic pain
- Have never had a live birth
- Suffer from chronic fatigue
- Are suffering from anxiety associated with pregnancy loss
They provide comprehensive care for types of pregnancy complications (and more!), so you can experience a healthy pregnancy.
Can I prevent a miscarriage?
While you can’t prevent every miscarriage from occurring, with the help of the team at PUSH San Diego, you can take steps to lower your risk of a miscarriage in the future. Your dedicated provider may recommend ongoing AcuGraph® acupuncture exams and treatments in addition to:
- Blue Poppy® Chinese herb supplements
- Personalized diet and lifestyle changes
- Conceivable customized supplements
- EarSeeds® ear acupuncture
- doTERRA® essential oils
- Tuina massage
- Navel cupping

At PUSH San Diego we are here to care for you all throughout your journey of becoming a parent, both before and after childbirth. Your medical care as the mother should not end after you come home with your baby, as women have unique needs after pregnancy and giving birth. Our goal is to help you navigate those early challenges of motherhood, ensure that your body is adjusting after birth, aid with breastfeeding support, and provide counseling for your mental and physical postpartum needs.
Becoming a mother changes you, and whether it is your first child or third, your body is bound to experience a variety of physical changes. Depending on whether you had any complications during childbirth, you may need medical care to help your body effectively heal and readjust to, well, not being pregnant. Many mothers tend to ignore or simply manage their own health needs right after giving birth as they focus on giving care to their new infant, so we strive to help ensure that all our patients receive the medical support and care they need after coming home from the hospital.
Postpartum Mental Health
Postpartum mental health is equally important to a new mother’s wellbeing. The dramatic change in hormonal balance can be traumatic for someone navigating those first few months of motherhood, and can be an isolating and emotional experience. Our skilled team will work with you to aid in not only the physical side of your postpartum journey, but also the mental aspects of new motherhood to ensure that you are in the best state to enjoy this season of life.
Another important aspect of postpartum health is birth control. We always want to make sure our patients have the information and support they need to make informed decisions about their plans for contraception. We encourage all of our patients to make a decision that will work best for their lifestyle, beliefs, and personal preference.

- Agonizing heartburn
- Frequent headaches

- Rashes or stretch marks
- Strange aches and pains
- Persistent nausea and vomiting
You may also experience abnormal spotting or membrane ruptures that could increase your risk of miscarriage. Because of these types of problems, it’s important to have a health provider you can trust to provide care and treatment throughout your pregnancy (and beyond).

What causes infertility?
Infertility can be devastating, but it doesn’t mean you can’t conceive. Typically, doctors describe infertility as not being able to get pregnant after a year if you’re under age 35. After age 35, infertility means that you can’t get pregnant after six months of trying.
In women, infertility generally stems from a problem with ovulation. This can be due to a hormone imbalance, including polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). You may also struggle with infertility because of:
- Pelvic inflammatory infections
- Blocked fallopian tubes
- Uterine fibroids
But infertility isn’t just a women’s health issue; men struggle with infertility, too. Poor sperm production, abnormal sperm shape or movement, or even damage to your testicles can all lead to infertility. In some cases, infertility affects both partners.
When should I get help for infertility?
The compassionate team of alternative health providers at PUSH San Diego encourages you to come in if you’re experiencing difficulty getting or staying pregnant. It’s particularly important to have an evaluation if:
- You’ve had more than one miscarriage
- Your doctor told you pregnancy might not be achievable
- You previously had a high-risk or complex pregnancy or labor and birth
Providers at PUSH San Diego treat both men and women, so you and your partner can undergo quality care under one roof.

High Risk Pregnancy
The journey through childbirth is a miraculous experience, but a high-risk pregnancy can make it an incredibly stressful situation. The team at PUSH San Diego is experts in helping mothers dealing with high-risk pregnancies. They offer phenomenal acupuncture therapy to help expectant mothers through their high-risk pregnancies. It helps to calm the mind in addition to whatever conditions are happening at the time. To learn more about how acupuncture and Chinese medicine can aid in your high-risk pregnancy, schedule a visit today by calling the offices or booking an appointment online.
What is a high-risk pregnancy?
A pregnancy is deemed to be high-risk when there are complications that can potentially affect successful labor and birth. A high-risk pregnancy typically calls for special care and management in order to ensure a positive outcome for the mother and her baby.
What causes a high-risk pregnancy?
A pregnancy can become high-risk for a number of reasons, including:
Age of the mother
The likelihood of miscarriage and genetic defects increases when the mother is younger than 17 or older than 40 when the baby is due. Pregnancies with a person of advanced maternal age are sometimes referred to as “geriatric pregnancies,” as ridiculous as this may sound. We do treat a lot of older moms in our clinic so don’t worry if you’re over 40 - you have come to the right place!
Pre-existing medical conditions
Certain medical conditions that the mother has before becoming pregnant can affect the likelihood of successful labor and birth, including:
- High blood pressure
- Problems with your lung, kidney, or heart
- Autoimmune diseases
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Chronic illnesses
Newly developed medical conditions
Medical conditions that you develop after getting pregnant can also make your pregnancy considered high-risk. Two of the most common conditions that occur during pregnancy are preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.
Preeclampsia causes high blood pressure, swelling, and urinary protein. It can be very harmful if not treated, but is typically manageable with proper care.
Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that comes on during pregnancy and tends to go away after labor and birth. Like preeclampsia, gestational diabetes can be potentially harmful to a successful pregnancy but is entirely treatable.
With the increased use of infertility treatments, more mothers today are becoming pregnant with multiple births. Carrying twins, triplets, or more than one baby puts your pregnancy at higher risk of pregnancy-induced high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, and premature labor.
Other medical conditions
Some other medical conditions that can affect the risk of a pregnancy or can stem from a high-risk pregnancy include PUPPS (pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy) and placenta previa.
PUPPS is an itchy rash that appears on the stretch marks of the stomach in the late stages of pregnancy and can be very uncomfortable.
Placenta previa is a condition that threatens the connection between the placenta and the uterine wall and happens when the placenta is too far down in the uterus, where it covers up the cervix.
What techniques help treat a high-risk pregnancy?
Mothers and parents that are in a compromised mental or physical state can seek guidance, treatment, and relief in many forms. The team of experts at PUSH San Diego can use acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping therapy to help mothers through high-risk pregnancies, even providing assistance to mothers with conditions that have been labeled as terminal.
Acupuncture has been proven to increase healthy blood flow to the uterus and fetus, and this in turn promotes your child’s healthy development and works to treat many conditions associated with high-risk pregnancies.
If you’re experiencing signs of a potential miscarriage, like spotting or the premature rupture of membranes, the team at PUSH San Diego can administer acupuncture and moxibustion treatments to help possibly prevent loss. PUSH San Diego even offers in-home visits for these services.
To learn more about how the experts at PUSH San Diego can use acupuncture to help you through your high-risk pregnancy, schedule a visit today by calling the office or booking online.
Acupressure, a non-needle technique, is an excellent alternative for patients who want the health benefits of acupuncture treatments but are hesitant about working with needles. PUSH San Diego offers exceptional acupressure treatments to help patients in a variety of situations, including all stages of the fertility, pregnancy, and birthing journey. To learn more about how acupressure can improve your quality of life, schedule a visit today by calling the office or booking an appointment online.
What is acupressure?
Acupressure works on the same basic principles as acupuncture: Your acupuncture specialist stimulates particular areas of your body (acupoints) in order to restore proper flow of your life-force energy (qi) through the energy channels in your body (meridians).
In this non-needle technique that activates your acupoints, acupressure uses manual pressure applied by your specialist’s fingers, palms, elbows, feet, or by a special device, like magnets or Swarovski ear seeds from earseeds.com. Your ear is a microsystem of your entire body, and just as foot reflexology uses your foot to access healing in different areas of your body, your specialist can treat any disease or condition through your ear. Ear seeds, in particular, are little vaccaria seeds woven into a fabric that’s similar to a Band-Aid that your specialist uses to stimulate the acupoints of your ear.
Acupressure is a great non-needle technique for patients who have particular anxieties about needles to enjoy the benefits of acupuncture.
What conditions can acupressure treat?
Acupressure is used to treat a wide range of conditions, including:
- Stress management
- Nausea or vomiting
- Muscle tension and pain
- Motion sickness
- Menstrual cramps
PUSH San Diego specializes in using acupressure in all phases of the fertility, pregnancy, birthing, and postpartum cycle. The team at PUSH San Diego can provide you with handouts that detail how stimulating particular acupressure points can assist in the natural promotion of labor.
How can acupressure help me during labor and birth?
PUSH San Diego offers PUSH professionals that can support you with acupressure treatments during your labor and birth. Your PUSH professional is professionally licensed and properly insured, and can be with you by your side at home, in the hospital, or at a birthing center.
Acupressure can help provide relief from the pain, stress, anxiety, and nausea that are expected components of the birthing process, but it can also help with some of the unexpected aspects of labor and birth. Some of the benefits that acupressure can have on your birthing experience include:
- Ripening your cervix
- Encouraging the start of labor if you’re past your due date
- Supporting and enhancing the natural progression of labor
- Shortening your labor time
- Helping to turn a malpositioned baby or breech baby
- Increasing endorphins to reduce pain
- Reducing edema, or swelling in your hands, face, legs, ankles, and feet
Your partner can also learn particular acupressure techniques to provide support and assistance during and after your pregnancy. To help you better understand the acupressure process, the practice provides handouts to explain the acupressure points, both at the time of your visit and online under the “Resources” section of the website.
To learn more about how the specialists at PUSH San Diego can improve your quality of life or your journey through childbirth with high-quality acupressure, schedule a visit today by calling the office or booking an appointment with the convenient online tool.
Initial treatment will include a full body assessment as well as a skin analysis to establish goals of treatment and address any concerns that you might have. A combination of body and facial acupuncture is then performed in order to balance the skin from the inside out. All treatments will include a Gua Sha and or Jade Rolling facial massage to help integrate the needles, increase circulation, sculpt and tone facial muscles and promote lymphatic circulation.
What is cosmetic acupuncture?
Cosmetic Acupuncture is a facial rejuvenation treatment that focuses on the natural enhancement of the skin. Ultra-thin Acupuncture needles are strategically placed to increase micro-circulation in the areas of concern, promoting increased collagen production and reducing tension held in the muscles of the face.
What are the results?
With consistent treatment you will notice a decrease in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, redness, puffiness, sagging skin, acne, acne scars and hyperpigmentation. Skin will be brighter, smoother, tighter and glowing!
How many treatments do I need?
Treatment plans will vary depending on the individual and areas of concern, however, a typical course of treatment is 1-2 treatments per week for 6-12 weeks. This provides a sufficient time frame to address any internal imbalances contributing to the state of the skin.
*Patients are welcome to receive facial rejuvenation treatments once, twice or at their discretion, however, results will be less dramatic and will likely not last as long as the full course of treatment.
As facial treatments are safe and gentle, they generally have no adverse effects. On occasion, a small amount of bruising may occur, however, this is normal and will disappear within a couple of days.
Can I receive treatment if I have Botox and or Fillers?
Definitely! However, I recommend waiting approximately one month following injections. We want Botox to stay where its meant to.
Typically, guys come in seeking relief from pain or stress, or often are dragged in by their partners because they hear you talk of pain from past/old injuries, they notice your sleep issues (snoring, apnea), they are hoping you will find stress management, etc… There are so many reasons you would look to find us, and we can help with them all.
Many guys are looking to get healthy again, too, and want to re-establish a workout and lifestyle program. We can work with you to help you recover from your post exercise pains and help you figure out foods to support your new lifestyle. We also offer supplements and herbal formulas to help strengthen and balance your body and can work with any medications you might be taking.
