Acupuncture Q & A

What is acupuncture? Book  Free Consultation

Acupuncture is a system of healing derived from Chinese medicine. The core philosophy of acupuncture is that your body contains a life-force energy (qi), that needs to be kept in balance and harmony in order for you to be healthy. By balancing your qi, you restore your body’s natural regenerative abilities and strengthen its ability to heal on its own.

Your acupuncturist balances your qi by inserting ultrathin needles or filaments into very specific points of your body, called acupoints. These acupoints help direct your qi through particular energy pathways, known as meridians.

Western medicine recognizes acupoints as the convergence site of many important blood vessels, nerve bundles, and lymph tissue, and the Acupuncture Evidence Project has demonstrated acupuncture’s ability to treat 177 different conditions, including allergies, gynecological disorders, and heart problems.

How can acupuncture help me on my childbirth journey?

We use acupuncture to enhance your experience at every stage of your childbirth journey, including:

Fertility

PUSH San Diego uses acupuncture to treat all different types of infertility issues and to support both natural fertility and IUI/IVF measures. By restoring the body’s natural harmony, acupuncture can help balance a woman’s reproductive cycle and a man’s hormones. Acupuncture fertility treatments typically take about three months, with visits anywhere from once or twice a week to once or twice a month.

Pregnancy

Receiving acupuncture during pregnancy can promote the healthy development of your baby by increasing blood flow to your uterus, helping protect you from:

  • Potential miscarriage
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Back and pelvic pain
  • Low iron levels
  • Fatigue
  • Swelling
  • Breech baby

Pregnancy acupuncture treatments to naturally prepare for labor generally begin between weeks 36 and 38. Please give us a call or click the request information button above to ask about scheduling earlier for other concerns.

Labor and birth

Acupuncture can greatly assist in preparing you for the labor process by releasing particular hormones, like prostaglandin, relaxin, and oxytocin. PUSH San Diego also offers acupuncture services during your labor and birth. You can schedule a licensed and insured PUSH Professional Birth Angel to be with you during your big day. While Birth Angels typically just use acupressure during labor and birth, there are instances where acupuncture can help, too.

Postpartum

Acupuncture can help you heal, recover, and regain your strength after you’ve delivered your beautiful baby. PUSH San Diego can also use acupuncture to support your lactation and postpartum emotional state.  We offer in home lactation consultations and acupuncture treatments as well as pelvic steaming to help recover from birth.

What should I expect from my acupuncture appointment?

Your acupuncture treatment begins with a virtual Zoom or telephone conversation with the doctor. From the comfort of your home or office, we discuss your condition and decide upon a particular course of treatment.

PUSH San Diego practices gentle acupuncture, which utilizes a minimally invasive insertion technique to make your experience more comfortable, relaxing, and pain-free. Your treatment will be incredibly soothing – most patients actually fall asleep during their session and feel deeply relaxed afterward.
